Ephrata Raceway Park Article by Heather Hector and reported by Katie Wiley “Loose on, loose off.” It’s not a line from a 1980’s karate movie, but rather the condition several of the NW Pro 4 trucks found themselves in this Saturday at Ephrata Raceway Park. Driver Jim Milligan Jr. of the 02 truck was happy with his set up right out of the box, however. Milligan, who has won each of the truck races he’s driven at ERP, became the 4th different driver to set fast time for 2010. It would prove to be a competitive field, with the closest pack of trucks so far this season. Ty Tipps driving the #9 truck, raced his way from the back row to take home the trophy in the B dash, and the long anticipated #58 truck of Terry Warren would live up to expectations, driven to victory in the A dash by Doug Wilkinson. Along with their trophy each driver received a cash bonus to sweeten the deal, sponsored by Ignition Christian Fellowship. Bobby Baker drove the #78 to an early lead in the heat race, with #17 Mike Wiley bringing the pressure from the outside, and #58 Wilkinson looking to the inside. Baker lost throttle mid-race causing a chain reaction down the back stretch, with Wilkinson, the #02 of Milligan, and the #88 of Jeff Hector getting up close and personal. Wiley would take the lead and the win, followed by Wilkinson, Milligan, and Hector dragging the nose of his truck the final laps. Rick Shaver in the #85, Tipps in the #9, and Ken Milligan in the #2 rounded out the pack. Line up shifted for the 30 lap main event, after Ken Milligan opted to start his #2 truck in the back with handling issues which had led to contact with the back stretch wall during the dash. Again, Wilkinson would make his way to the front with the #58 truck, having to hold off both the #17 and the #88 of Wiley and Hector, who raced hard for the number 2 spot and to challenge the 58 for the lead. The 85 of Rick Shaver would end his night early, pulling off the track midway through the race. The first of 2 cautions came out with a spin from the #9 of Tipps coming out of turn 2, bringing on the cone restart. Wilkinson held his position on the line, with Hector and Jim Milligan following him low, and Wiley and Baker trying the outside lane. The 58 held his ground as both Hector and Wiley worked to set him up for the pass. Things got tight as Hector nosed his 88 to the inside of Wilkinson, and Milligan in the 02 tried to get underneath the 88, sending him for a spin coming out of turn 4 and bringing out the 2nd caution and cone restart, with 2 laps to go. In an exciting green, white, checkered finish, Doug Wilkinson sealed the deal driving the #58 truck to victory, followed by Wiley, Hector, Baker, Jim Milligan, Tipps, and Ken Milligan. Fast Time #02 James Milligan 15.664 :: Stateline Stadium Speedway Results Article by Heather Hector Stateline Idaho was the place to be Saturday night to see the NW Pro 4 trucks in action. Eight trucks and drivers made up the field for the evening, with Matt Maynard of Everett, WA bringing along his dad’s #1 Thunder truck as a stand in for his #18 ride. Mike Wiley driving the #17 truck set the bar for the night with a fast time of 15.002, and became the 3rd different driver in as many races to set fast time. Rob Tipps out of Spokane, WA drove the #9 to victory in the trophy dash, after racing hard along the outside of Jim Milligan Jr. in his #02 truck. Jeff Hector in the #88 truck also took to the outside for the heat race win, followed by Milligan’s #02, Bobby Baker in the #78, and Wiley’s #17 who crossed the finish line 3-wide in their battle for 2nd place. The 25 lap main event began with the #02 taking an early lead from his outside front row starting position over pole sitter #85 Mike Tipps. Hector’s #88 came hard on his heels and took over the top spot, with the #17 soon taking up 2nd behind him . Rob Tipps and Bobby Baker also made the pass on Milligan, with Tipps taking a look to see if he had anything for the leaders. Maynard in the #1 truck left the track with mechanical issues after being caught from behind by the lead pack, who then put Mike Tipps in the #85 and Ken Milligan in the #2 a lap down. Mike Wiley kept the pressure coming, nosing his #17 up to Hector’s door, but for the 2nd race in a row, Jeff Hector drove his #88 to victory and took home the hardware. Fast Time #17 Mike Wiley 15.002 :: Wenatchee Valley Super Oval Results ::
Wenatchee Valley Super Oval, May 22, 2010 This week the Northwest Pro 4 Trucks raced on the east side of the mountains at the Wenatchee Valley Super Oval. Nine trucks turned out for the night’s racing, all nine going on to start the main event. The competition began with the B dash, and “Redemption” was the word Auburn’s Ken Milligan used to describe the win in his #2 truck, after having been plagued by a frustrating run of mechanical failures. Ephrata’s Jeff Hector racing the #88, would both set a fast time of 14.676, and take home the hardware for the A dash, hoping it was an indication of things to come later that evening. The 10 lap heat race held some moments of close quarter racing, as #02 Jim Milligan, and #78 Bobby Baker battled for the same piece of racing real estate. Mike Wiley in the #17, and Hector’s #88 also charged through the pack from the back, with Hector taking the win and setting himself in position for a clean sweep of the evening. The 30 lap main event ended almost as soon as it began for racer Rob Tipps in the #9 truck. Coming off turn 2 in the first lap, the set screw holding his steering wheel shaft to the steering box sheared off, leaving him along for a short, quick ride into the back stretch wall. The remaining 8 trucks would take the green for the 2nd time, again with Milligan and Baker jostling for position. Baker took the lead spot, with the pressure coming from Mike Wiley’s #17. Hector passed Milligan’s #02 truck for 3rd, and quickly gained ground on the #78 and #17. The #88 overtook both trucks for the lead, with Wiley again applying the pressure after passing Baker for 2nd. The trucks raced through lapped traffic, leaving only Hector, Wiley, Baker and Jim Milligan on the lead lap. With the red #17 on his heels, Hector was not to be denied, and took the checkered flag for the win, breaking a longstanding streak of 2nd place finishes jokingly dubbed ‘the bridesmaid curse’. His quote for the night? “Finally!” Fast Time :: #88 Jeff Hector 14.676 :: Evergreen Speedway Results :: Evergreen Speedway - March 15, 2010 The Northwest Pro 4 Truck series held their first official points race of 2010 Saturday night at Evergreen Speedway, taking place on their 3/8 mile track. The event saw the return of the white #4 truck and driver Pete Brady who had sat out the 2009 season, yet would soon show that he was just as fast as ever, setting fast time with a 19.263. The #43 truck owned by Allen Dixon also returned, with both a sharp new paint scheme and new driver as the #9 truck driven by Rob Tipps. Joining in on the night’s racing were local drivers Aaron Greene in the #17x, who would take the B trophy dash, and Matt Greene in the #7. JR Kelley in the #3, Jim Milligan Jr. in the #02 truck, and Doug Wilkinson in the #53 would all call it an early evening with mechanical issues that would prevent them from qualifying. Both the #85 of Mike Tipps, and the #9 of Rob Tipps would also end their nights early, neither driver able to start the heat race or the main event. Brady in his #4 would take the heat, coming from a full invert to take the win. Jeff Hector in his blue lightning #88 started the main event on the pole, with Bobby Baker in the #78 on the outside. Hector, along with 2009 points champion Mike ‘Wiley Coyote’ in the #17, and Pete Brady in the #4, who both began directly behind in row 2, would round out the trio that would battle it out for the top spot for the 20 lap main event. Hector gave nothing up, as both Wiley and Brady tried for position to the outside of the 88, until Brady, after trying the driver both on the high and low side, overtook Hector after several laps with a run to the outside for the lead, win, and early points lead.
